Today we are featuring Kathleen Bowie, of Kathleen Bowie Photography. Kathleen has been in the photography business since 2002. Her photography has evolved since her early days and she says she hopes it always will.
Today we are going to look at her photographs from a particular session she did with a newborn baby girl named Sofie. In preparing for each newborn session, the night before the session Kathleen lays out all of her props and set-ups for each image she would like to get.
“I aim to come up with 4 unique looks, but because I am so excited I usually end up with around 7 different set-ups, knowing of course, that I will most not likely get to use all of them!” Kathleen says.
Baby Sofie was a champion sleeper, which allowed Kathleen to transfer her from prop to prop without a fuss. Kathleen says this doesn’t happen with every shoot and during a newborn session photographers must be 50% photographer and 50% baby whisperer!
Kathleen also shared some of her tricks with us. “When the baby is comfortably asleep on one prop, I try to get a few different angles and then present some in b&w and some in color, so it looks as if I completely changed the set up, when in reality all I did was gently move the babies hand, or put on a different bow or hat! I call these..."smooth moves"! :) First, set up for your original shot, then do a few "smooth moves" on that same prop to get different looks.”
In this session Kathleen used head pieces from Fab Flower Headbands. One of the amazing things about Kathleen is that she uses her photography business to support a good cause. A portion of all her proceeds goes to benefit the Pregnancy Resource Center of Gwinnett Georgia, which is a non-profit ministry that exists for the benefit of women and their children, both born and unborn. They provide support to the woman who faces an unplanned pregnancy, is hurting from a previous abortion, or is in need of sexual/relational guidance.
“My heart aches for these women and babies and so with each and every photo shoot I do, a portion of the proceeds goes to support this wonderful ministry, Kathleen says. “So when you hear the click of my shutter, know that a little beating heart is helped...by my clients! I encourage you to check out the Pregnancy Resource Center of Gwinnett at www.prcgfriends.org”
